After one of the quietest starts to the West Pacific typhoon seasons (which really is year-round), Super Typhoon Nepartak is taking advantage of all the untouched, warmer-than-normal water in the western part of the basin. Thanks to Dan Lindsey (NESDIS/STAR), the NWS Ocean Prediction Center, Weather Prediction Center, and NESDIS Satellite Analysis Branch have access to the 2.5 minute imagery that JMA provides to monitor typhoons or other significant weather. The below animation covers 7/6 into 7/7 and you’ll notice the small, tight eye on 7/6 that undergoes an eyewall replacement cycle overnight. The new eye is larger and looks rather impressive as the storm bears down on Taiwan.

Thanks for posting. I am in Taipei (northern Taiwan) now. Some rain but not too bad yet. It appears that the typhoon has moved a little southward so northern part of the island is so far spared.
