On Thursday, 09/06/2012, the GOES-14 Super Rapid Scan Operations were focused on two areas: convection over the eastern Plains and a new tropical invest, 90L. One of the perks to working with NAWIPS is the ability to overlay products on top of one another. In the animation below (click on the image), I overlaid the 1-minute lightning to match up with the 1-minute visible satellite imagery. In the ~3 hour animation, the lightning intensity is impressive, but wanes towards the end (18z). This kind of information could be very useful to forecasters as it provides insight into subtle intensity changes that could lead to significant changes in forecast philosophy. This aspect of GOES-R is a very exciting thought!
Stay tuned for more exciting satellite examples!
